St Estaban Houses, Tujunga, California by Eugene Weston

Eugene Weston designed two hillside spec houses for Victor Sease in 1951.The houses located at 6646 and 6648 St. Estaban, Tujunga, California were designed with two bedrooms and one bath in the post and beam style. In an effort to retain as many trees and surrounding hillside as possible, a small shelf six to eight feet wide was graded on the uphill side of the building site. Along the shelf a continuous concrete footing was constructed. On the down hillside a row of six posts 12 feet on center held the cantilevered double two inch girders with 2 x 8 floor joists. The floor joists spanned from the footings to the posts and beyond to form the deck. The ceiling construction mirrored the floor with the two inch double beams 12' on center. The ceiling consisted of 3" x 6" joists with insulation and a finish of fiberboard between the joists. The shed roof was composite sheathing and tar. The walls were of redwood board and batten. The two houses were sold before completion. Note Eugene Weston designed stools on the deck. The stools have been reissued by 10Ten in Silverlake. Photos by James Reed.
